Federer Downs Millman to Bag 100th Win At Australian Open

Tennis world number three, Roger Federer overcame a tough challenge to defeat 47th ranked John Millman 4-6, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) in the Third Round of Australian Open on Friday and became the first player, man or woman, to reach the 100th win mark in two majors of the Open era.

Federer, 38, was stretched virtually to the limits by his 30 year old Australian opponent, Millman, but the Swiss fought hard and won by the skin of his teeth.

With his 100th career win at the Australian Open in the bag, Federer admitted that Millman made him work for it rather than strolling to achieve the landmark.

“I was getting ready to explain myself in the press conference. The demons, they’re there, they’re lurking,” Federer who achieved his first centennial mark at Wimbledon last year said in his on-court interview.

“I never really felt comfortable. I felt John [Milkman] did a good job keeping me on my back foot … Until the last shot, then i went for it.”

It was sweet revenge accomplished by Federer against Millman. It can be recalled that the Aussie produced his best major result defeating the Swiss in the Round of 16 at the 2018 US Open.
