The gaffer is not keen to rush things for Virgil’s recovery.

In his press conference ahead of this weekend’s Sheffield United game, Jurgen Klopp’s mood was somber reflective of the line of questioning he received on Liverpool’s recent spate of injuries.

On Virgil Van Dijk:

The obvious central concern was Virgil Van Dijk’s present condition and scheduled date of surgery, to which the gaffer was clear that he did not want to give any hard and fast timelines.

“He is okay. It doesn’t make sense [for us] to give a time schedule everyday. It’ll happen in the appropriate time. It’ll take time, everyone copes differently.”

On injuries:

“Apart from Ox and Virg being out, and maybe Kostas – who gets closer and closer [to fitness] but is not in contention for this game or the next – we have to judge the others day by day through discussions with the medical department. [As per] my last information, all the boys who played the other night are fine.”

On Thiago and Joel Matip:

“I don’t know. We have training after the press conference and we’ll see who’s out there. I don’t want to rule anybody out till someone tells me, and no one has told me so far.”

On Sheffield United and Rhian Brewster:

“Sheffield deserves a lot of attention for what they do. Even though their recent results aren’t what they wished for, their performances haven’t been that bad recently, and they had a full week to prepare for the game. It’ll be a tough one for us.

“We know him well [Brewster], we know how good he is, he really is our boy. If Rhian is on the pitch then we know we shouldn’t let him finish at all, because whenever he gets the ball he is a natural finisher.”

On Andy Robertson’s upcoming 100th Premier League game for Liverpool:

“Finally something nice to talk about! It’s a wonderful story, from the moment he arrived here he has pushed himself to the highest level. I like him as a person very much. I like working with him, he’s a brilliant character and a super player.”
